If you’re considering BOTOX for the first time, you likely have many questions about what to expect. When will I see the results? How long do they last? Do the injections hurt? These are questions our injectors hear often, and while each person is different, we can give you a pretty good idea of what to expect during and after your BOTOX treatment.
How Long Does BOTOX Take to Work?
Some patients notice the initial effects after 4 or 5 days, but you can more likely expect to see significant results about 10 days after your appointment.
Unlike dermal fillers, which show results almost immediately after the injections, it takes time for BOTOX to work. That’s because fillers are gels that add physical volume. BOTOX, on the other hand, works by intercepting nerve signals to the facial muscles you use to squint, frown, look surprised, and change expressions in other ways.
Factors that can influence the time it takes to see results include:
- Metabolism: People with a higher metabolism may notice results sooner, as their bodies process the neurotoxin more rapidly.
- Injector technique: A skilled injector knows the optimal injection sites and dosages for your specific needs.
- Treatment area: BOTOX tends to work more quickly in areas with finer lines, such as around the eyes (crow’s feet) and on the forehead. Deeper or more etched lines, such as worry lines between the eyebrows, may take longer to show changes.
- Post-injection activity: Following aftercare guidelines—such as remaining upright for a few hours post-treatment and not touching the treated area—can also influence the onset time.
How Long Do Botox Results Last?
BOTOX results typically last about 3 to 4 months. However, this can vary based on many of the same factors that determine how soon you’ll see results. Some patients find that with regular treatments, the effects may last longer over time. It’s also worth noting that lighter dosing for a more natural look may last only 6 to 8 weeks, while heavier dosing could last more than 6 months.

Request Your AppointmentHow Does BOTOX Compare to Alternatives?
Even though BOTOX is the most popular and well-known neuromodulator on the market, there are alternatives. They work similarly to BOTOX, although none are approved by the FDA to treat as many areas as BOTOX. Some may take effect slightly faster or slower than BOTOX, but generally, the differences aren’t enough to be meaningful. Getting the best results involves the skill and experience of the injector.
What To Expect During and After Your Treatment
A BOTOX appointment typically lasts only about 30 minutes. The injections themselves take 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the number of treatment areas and the number of units needed to get the desired results. Patients usually tolerate the injections well, describing the sensation as a slight pinch.
Most patients return to their normal activities immediately after their appointments. You should follow these guidelines:
- Don’t rub or massage the treated area for 24 hours
- Don’t lie down for at least 4 hours after the treatment
- Limit strenuous exercise for 24 hours
These precautions help ensure BOTOX remains in the treatment area and doesn’t spread to unintended muscles.
Is BOTOX Right for You?
BOTOX is the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world. Whether it’s right for you depends on your goals and overall health. While it’s safe for most people, its safety for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding isn’t established, so you should wait until after you’ve finished breastfeeding to schedule a BOTOX appointment.
