IPL and laser results can last for many months or longer, depending on the concern treated, the technology used, and individual factors such as sun exposure and ongoing skin changes.
At Preventative Medical Clinic (PMC), we treat sun damage, pigmentation, redness, uneven skin tone, and signs of aging with technologies such as AFT, Dye-VL, and LaseMD Ultra®. Because these technologies work differently, our team can recommend the treatment or combination of treatments that best matches your skin and goals.
How Long Do IPL and Laser Results Last?
There is no single expiration date for IPL or laser results. Successfully treated brown spots, for example, may remain significantly improved over time. Likewise, a visible vessel that clears doesn’t simply reappear because a certain number of months have passed. However, treatment can’t prevent your skin from continuing to respond to sunlight, hormones, genetics, and the natural aging process.
Some patients may go many months or longer before considering another treatment. Others naturally develop pigmentation or redness more quickly and may benefit from periodic maintenance. We’ll recommend a maintenance plan based on how your skin responds.
IPL and Laser Treatment Options at PMC
PMC offers several light and laser technologies, allowing us to match treatment to your skin concerns and goals.
- AFT for sun damage, brown spots, and redness. AFT, or Advanced Fluorescence Technology, is an IPL-based treatment that uses controlled light pulses to target unwanted pigmentation and redness.
- Dye-VL for targeted treatment of redness and pigmentation. Dye-VL uses a narrow band of pulsed light to target vascular and pigmented concerns. While improvement can be long-lasting, people who are prone to rosacea, flushing, or broken capillaries may develop new vessels over time.
- LaseMD Ultra, a laser treatment for pigmentation and skin rejuvenation. LaseMD Ultra differs from IPL because it uses a 1927 nm fractional thulium laser to create microscopic treatment zones in the skin. The treatment is designed to improve pigmentation and overall skin quality while stimulating the skin’s natural renewal process.

How Many IPL or Laser Treatments Will You Need?
The number of treatments you need depends on the concerns being treated, their extent, the technology used, and your individual response. Someone with a few isolated brown spots may need a very different treatment plan than someone with years of accumulated sun damage, diffuse redness, rosacea, or significant pigmentation.
For AFT or Dye-VL, PMC typically recommends a series of 3 to 5 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart. Your provider will determine whether that schedule or a different approach is appropriate for you.
Many patients achieve their best results through an initial treatment series followed by maintenance as needed rather than viewing IPL or laser treatment as a one-time solution.
What Makes IPL and Laser Results Last Longer?
Protecting your skin from sun exposure and following an appropriate skin care and maintenance plan can help preserve your improvements. Because UV exposure can stimulate new pigmentation and contribute to further photoaging, consistent sun protection is especially important to limit additional sun damage after treatment.
To help support your results, your PMC team may recommend:
- Using broad-spectrum SPF every day
- Wearing hats and protective clothing during prolonged outdoor exposure
- Avoiding unnecessary tanning
- Following a professional skincare program
- Addressing new pigmentation before it becomes extensive
- Scheduling maintenance treatments when appropriate
Your individual recommendations will depend on your skin and the treatment you’ve received.
Which IPL or Laser Treatment Is Right for You?
The right treatment depends on whether you want to address pigmentation, redness, texture, overall skin quality, or a combination of concerns. With several technologies available, the PMC team doesn’t have to make one device fit every patient.
We evaluate factors such as your pigmentation, redness, skin texture, amount of sun damage, skin type, and treatment goals before making a recommendation. Depending on your needs, that may mean AFT, more targeted Dye-VL treatment, LaseMD Ultra, or a combination of technologies as part of a comprehensive skin rejuvenation plan.
Our goal is to choose the technology that best fits your skin, concerns, and desired results.
