Melasma is one of the most common and challenging skin conditions we treat at our Omaha, NE, clinic. Our experienced team of registered nurses and nurse practitioners understands the unique needs of patients with various skin types who are concerned about melasma. Choosing an experienced provider to treat your melasma is essential because many treatments used for excess pigment can be ineffective, and some may even exacerbate the condition due to their heat.
What Is Melasma?
Due to an overproduction of melanin, which gives the skin, eyes, and hair color, melasma causes brown patches on the face. These patches typically emerge on the cheeks, the bridge of the nose, the forehead, and above the upper lip. In some cases, melasma may develop on other parts of the body when exposed to the sun. In addition to sun exposure, melasma is associated with hormonal changes caused by pregnancy or birth control pills.
How to Treat Melasma
There is no single “best” treatment for melasma. Our providers devise custom treatment plans that may combine medication with various procedures to minimize the appearance of melasma. These treatments work by targeting the condition’s underlying cause, which is the overproduction of melanin.
Melasma may go away on its own. This usually happens when a trigger, such as pregnancy or a medication, causes melasma. When you deliver your baby or stop taking the medication, melasma can fade.

Treatment options
Even though melasma poses no risk to your health, we understand that skin discoloration can affect your self-confidence. Our experienced, knowledgeable providers will create a treatment plan that may include one or more of the following:
- LaseMD™ is a non-ablative (does not harm the skin’s surface), fully customizable laser skin resurfacing treatment that is FDA-approved for treating melasma and requires little to no downtime. The laser targets brown pigment, creating microchannels that break up excess melanin and reduce inflammation.
- Dye VL is a next-generation IPL treatment that uses Advanced Fluorescence Technology (AFT) pulsed light. It is non-ablative and gentle enough to treat melasma. The excess melanin absorbs the light, causing it to break down and be naturally removed by the body.
- Opus Plasma® combines radiofrequency (RF) and plasma energy instead of laser energy, making it safe for all skin types and tones. This fractional treatment creates pinpoint injuries to fade melasma. It also improves the skin’s texture and tone.
- Microneedling creates tiny openings in the skin through which topical pigment-lightening products or PRP can penetrate. It also causes the body to create fresh, new skin cells not altered by hormones and sun exposure to replace those affected by melasma.
- Skincare products selected by our experienced providers can minimize the appearance of melasma over time and protect from the sun.
