As we age, the tissues and muscles around our eyes weaken. The fat that previously supported the eyes moves into the lower eyelids, causing the area to appear puffy. Fluid can also accumulate in this area, adding to the swollen effect. Under eye fillers, also known as tear trough fillers, are one of our most popular treatments for replacing lost volume and minimizing dark circles.

In this post, we’ll answer the most common questions we hear about under eye fillers at our Omaha med spas so that you know what to expect before, during, and after treatment.

How Do Under Eye Fillers Work?

Dark circles under the eyes may be an inherited trait or associated with aging. Whatever the cause, injectable fillers such as JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC add volume to this area to create a smoother transition between the upper cheek and lower eyelid, reducing shadows.

These injectable treatments of hyaluronic acid gel stimulate the appearance of thicker fat pads under the skin. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the skin but diminishes over time. HA fillers attract water for additional plumping power, creating a natural look that lasts many months.

What Causes Dark Circles and Bags Under the Eyes?

The cause of dark circles and under eye bags varies. When we’re younger, fat and bone create structure in the midface. As we age, that fat and bone break down, creating a hollowing in the tear trough area and under eye bags. Extreme fatigue, dehydration, and genetics can all make the skin under the eyes look sunken and more translucent, allowing the dark tissue underneath to show through.

How Long Does Under Eye Filler Last?

There isn’t a simple answer to this question. Your results can last 6 to 18 months or longer, depending on the filler. Dermal fillers require touch-ups to maintain results. We recommend maintenance appointments at 9- to 12-month intervals to keep your results looking fresh.

How Many Syringes Do You Need for Under Eye Filler?

A little bit goes a long way when it comes to under eye fillers. Although the number of syringes differs for each patient based on their specific concerns, it typically takes about 2 syringes of fillers to improve the appearance of tear troughs.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Under Eye Filler?

You can benefit from tear trough fillers if volume loss under the eyes creates a hollowed-out appearance and you have good skin thickness and elasticity. However, you should avoid injectable fillers if you have festoons or malar bags under your eyes.

What’s an Alternative to Fillers?

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) injections can treat circles under the eyes by increasing collagen and elastin production. PRF injections improve skin health using your body’s own cells, including fibrin, platelets, leukocytes, cytokines, and circulating stem cells.

Other minimally invasive treatments for dark circles or bags under the eyes include microneedling with radiofrequency and laser skin resurfacing. Microneedling and laser resurfacing both stimulate collagen production to minimize dark circles and improve the skin’s texture.

What Should You Expect After an Under Eye Filler Treatment?

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and redness are typical immediately after getting tear trough fillers. These side effects are most apparent 24 to 48 hours after treatment. They can last several weeks but typically subside within 2 to 5 days. Most patients return to their routine activities the same day.
