Nail Fungus (also called onychomycosis)

Nail fungus is a common condition that begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. As the fungal infection goes deeper, nail fungus may cause your nail to discolor, thicken and crumble at the edge. It can affect several nails but usually not all of them.

Associated symptoms of the condition: A fungal nail infection usually isn’t painful. But without treatment, over time it can become uncomfortable or even painful to wear shoes, walk, or stand for a long time.

  • Yellow streaks in the nail bed and on the underside of the nail.
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of skin and nail fragments (debris) under the nail.
  • A discolored and thickened nail that may separate from the skin under the nail.
  • A brittle, broken, and thickened nail.
  • White spots or streaks on the nail surface.
  • Soft and powdery nail surface, as the infection gets worse.
  • Damaged, crumbly, and brown or gray nail surface. But the nail doesn’t separate from the skin underneath.

Why Treat Nail Fungus?

You may want to do one of our procedures because of how it looks and how it makes you feel.

  • Nail fungus looks bad, may hurt, or damage your nail or nail bed.
  • A fungal nail infection could lead to more serious problems if you have diabetes or a weak immune system.
  • If not treated, a fungal infection is likely to get worse and spread to other parts of the nail, the nail bed, and possibly the surrounding skin. Over time, the whole nail may become infected and damaged and may eventually fall out.

What is toenail fungus?

Toenail fungus or onychomycosis is a common fungal infection that affects around 900 million people worldwide. The nail can appear thickened, yellow or cloudy and will often become rough and crumbly and even separate from the nail bed. Although it can be argued this is a purely a cosmetic problem, the nail can become painful, difficult to cut and very brittle. In addition, particles can collect under the nail and become odorous.

What are the symptoms of toenail fungus?

The affected nail turns white-yellow or yellow-brown and the nail may thicken, develop a crust and the surrounding area may become red and swollen, causing discomfort. The nail can also become pitted and misshapen with grooves or ridges. The thickening, discoloration and irregularities are plainly visible.

Can you treat just the infected nail?

Once you have a nail fungal infection, it can be the main cause of infection in other nails, even spreading to the other foot or hand. The Laser that we use treats the entire foot or hand at the same time to ensure all microscopic organisms are killed to prevent the spread to other nails and to promote healthy nail growth.

Are you medically qualified to give this nail treatment?

All nail treatments are overseen out by our Certified Practitioners, with over 20 years of combined experience in diagnosing and treating nail conditions. In addition, each specialist has received in-depth training in USA on laser treatment, compounded medication treatment and oral therapy treatment.

Will my nails look normal again after treatment?

Your nails should look normal again if the appearance is solely affected by the fungal infection. For example, if the nail is thickened due to an injury of the matrix (root), as well as the fungus, then the thickness will not be rectified by the laser.

Can you treat fingernail fungus?

Yes, our solutions are just as effective on fingernails. In fact, we have treated many patients with fungal fingernail infections. We suggest you make an appointment to see us so we can assess your condition and advise on treatment.

What causes nail fungus?

Microscopic organisms cause nail fungal infections. Most commonly, a group of fungi called dermatophytes is responsible for nail infections. However, some yeasts and molds also cause these infections. Pathogens that cause nail fungus infection usually enter the skin through tiny cuts or small separations between the nail and nail bed. The fungi grow when the nail provides a suitably warm and moist environment, as is often the case inside shoes.

How can I be sure I have fungal infection?

We suggest a 15-minute free consultation. Nail fungus is the actual cause of the problem in only about 50% of cases we see, so we will advise you accordingly. We will not suggest our solutions if it isn’t suitable for your condition.

Why treat my fungal infection?

In minor or mild cases of fungal infection, people will often turn a blind eye. This can be a mistake as treated quickly there is a much higher success rate and less chance of infection spreading to other nails.

Is the laser treatment painful?

The laser treatment is not typically painful and and there is never a need for analgesia.

How effective is the treatment?

Studies report that 90% of patients in the study had 100% clear nails after 4 treatments and 98% of patients in the study showed improvement.
